NFC vs QR Code: Which Technology Is Faster in a Medical Emergency?
How NFC Works in an Emergency
NFC (Near Field Communication) is the same technology used in UPI payments and metro cards. A first responder simply holds their NFC-enabled smartphone within 4 centimetres of the Ealth card, and the emergency page opens instantly — no camera, no app, no internet required for the tap itself.
The process takes under two seconds. For an unconscious victim, this means the bystander does not need to find the QR code, frame it in a camera, or wait for a page to load.
How QR Code Works in an Emergency
The QR code is printed clearly on the front of every Ealth card. Any smartphone camera app can scan it — both iPhone and Android have native QR scanning built into the camera since 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Scanning opens a URL directly in the phone's browser. No app download, no login. The emergency page is designed to load in under 1.5 seconds even on 3G connections.
Speed Comparison
In controlled tests, NFC tap to page open averages 1.8 seconds. QR scan to page open averages 3.2 seconds (accounting for camera focus and page load). In a high-stress emergency scenario, NFC has the edge — especially for responders wearing gloves or working in low-light conditions where camera focus can struggle.
However, QR wins on compatibility: virtually every phone made since 2015 can read a QR code.
Which Phones Support Each
NFC is available on: all iPhones since iPhone 7, all Android flagships since 2015, and most mid-range Android phones since 2018. NFC is not present on entry-level feature phones.
QR scanning is available on: all smartphones with a rear camera and a camera app updated after 2017. This covers an estimated 95%+ of smartphones currently in active use in India.
Why Ealth Includes Both
We include both technologies precisely because we cannot predict what phone the first responder will have. In a crowd of bystanders, it is almost certain that at least one person has an NFC-enabled phone and at least one has a camera that can scan QR.
Redundancy is not a feature. In an emergency, it is a necessity.
